The town of Sant Mateu takes a trip to its brilliant medieval past celebrating Sant Mateu’s Medieval Fair the second weekend in July. Sant Mateu’s historic centre is set to go back to 13th, 14th and 15th century and remember those times when the trade of wool with Florence made that Sant Mateu became one of the most important towns in the Kingdom of Valencia. All of this will make it possible to introduce its visitors to the gastronomy, natural, cultural and tourist resources of the area, generating important sources of income for its residents.
The main risks are that, due to climatic reasons, the contest cannot be carried out in whole or in part, that they do not receive external financing for their organization. Also the economic effects that your cancellation may have on other activities in the city and its surroundings, due to cancellation of meals, accommodation, local commerce, etc.
The transferability of the Sant Mateu Medieval Fair to other locations in Europe depends on the availability of resources and investment. The fair is carried out at a relatively low cost and the city of Sant Mateu has basically benefited from subsidies and investments from local, provincial and regional governments. Other cities in Europe may not have access to the same level of resources, although some governments are increasingly providing funding for projects of this nature.
In general, the transferability potential of the Sant Mateu Medieval Fair to other cities in Europe is high, as long as the necessary resources and investment are available. In addition, the collaborative and participatory approach of its inhabitants with visitors, adopted in Sant Mateu could be successfully replicated in other cities in Europe, to ensure that the projects are successful.Statement/opinion from a company member involved in the best practice idea; either within your text or in a separate quote-textbox.

Starting this Friday, July 8, the town of Sant Mateu (Castellón) is submerged in one of the most successful events in the province of Castellón and which brings together thousands of visitors: the medieval fair that recreates the past of the town during the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries.
This year the town, one of the most welcoming and beautiful in the province, recovers the medieval fair after two editions in which it has not been possible to celebrate due to the pandemic and which, logically, “makes us more eager than ever of this ninth edition”, explains the mayoress, Ana Besalduch.
The population of Sant Mateu takes a trip to its splendid medieval past with the celebration of the Medieval Sant Mateu on the second weekend of July. The historic center of Sant Mateu is set to go back to the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries and recall the times when the wool trade with Florence made Sant Mateu one of the most important towns in the Kingdom of Valencia. This is reflected in the spectacular monumental heritage that is preserved in the old part of the town, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, and in its description of the capital of the Maestrat de Montesa.
The streets of the historic center are decorated with medieval decoration and are occupied by a medieval market with trades, period characters, a goose walk, music groups, street entertainment… Likewise, during these days the local shops and different artisans offer their products.
The date of the celebration coincides with the one that King Jaume I granted to the Order of the Hospital in order to hold an annual fair in Sant Mateu (the first concession obtained in Castellón). This year, the fair will be held from Friday the 8th, as well as Saturday the 9th and Sunday the 10th.
It is one of the most unique events that are held throughout the province since it is a town full of heritage and where jousting, executions, children’s activities are recreated…
The mayoress explains that “a few years ago, when we started this activity, our tourism was focused on Easter Week, August and little else and, now, we have achieved that there is tourism throughout the year and that the service sector achieves benefits at different stages of the year”.
This weekend, the appointment in Sant Mateu is mandatory since there will be a market, good gastronomy and activities of all kinds that will make the visit an unforgettable day.
